Before I begin this review let me introduce you to Dave Mercer. The following text is from the “About Dave” section of the Facts of Fishing website:
Crazy! Outrageous! Outlandish! Hilarious! Off-the-wall! Just a few of the words used to describe fishing funny-man Dave Mercer.
Host of television’s Facts of Fishing® THE SHOW and the Facts of Fishing® Tip Series he spends over 250 days a year fishing for just about anything that swims. When he’s not on the water, it seems like there is nothing that he won’t do to promote the sport of fishing and his passion for it. I mean, we’re talking about a guy who has eaten worms, minnows and even plastic lures on national television just to see how they tasted for a fish! He threw the first “CAST” ever in major league baseball history and has even jammed a hook into his hand just to show anglers how to get it out.
Humorous, extreme, and dedicated to the sport, with 3,884 Twitter followers and 22,624 Facebook “likes”; it is my pleasure to introduce you to Dave Mercer and his new book, Facts of Fishing: 135 Secrets Fish Don’t Want You To Know.
Format: Facts of Fishing is a 256 page paperback book chock full of color photographs and illustrations about fishing. The size of the book is small so it’s great to bring along while traveling, fishing, or even into the bathroom (sorry Dave). The book is comprised of 135 short tips which average one page in length. There are also a few longer format stories that were thrown into the mix.
Review: On the whole I really enjoyed this book; it was light, short, and easily digestible just like the Facts of Fishing videos. I was able to read the book over the course of a few days and I didn’t feel like I really had to concentrate on following a story. It was great to see that Dave Mercer’s passion for fishing and humor could shine through in his writing and while the book is a fairly short read, it contains some really good ideas. I found myself folding dog ears into the pages so I could return to some of the tips in the future.
Although most of this book is comprised of tips, I really enjoyed Dave Mercer’s longer format stories and I think this is where the book really shines. While I won’t give anything away, you have my personal guarantee that you will enjoy the story about how Dave Mercer lost a minnow bucket.
I didn’t have any complaints about this book everything was well written and illustrated. My only suggestion would be to better group similar tips. While reading the book there were a few tips on drop shotting that were similar and seeing one in the beginning and one in the end of the book gave me a little sense of déjà vu. Not really a big deal (but I have to point out something).
I would fully recommend this book to any fisherman. Facts of Fishing: 135 Secrets Fish Don’t Want You To Know is small and would make a great addition to a fisherman’s stocking for Christmas. I also think this book is kid friendly and would be a great way to share reading with children who like fishing but hate reading. Facts of Fishing is priced at $10.94CDN which is a great price for a book of this quality.

Dave Mercer has a great personality and a natural sense of humor that comes through loud and clear in his writing. I would be VERY interested in seeing another book written by him in the future. In my opinion his many years of fishing experience would make one heck of a longer format story book.
