On Monday I dropped my digital camera in water after taking a nice fall off a log (How To Fight A Fish and Not Die).

Didn't look that dangerous...

My camera was completely soaked so I decided to give the rice trick a try.  You may have seen this used to fix a wet cell phone before but I wasn’t convinced that the rice trick would work for my camera so I put together this video for your viewing pleasure.

If you have dropped your camera, phone or GPS in the water you might want to watch this.

As a fishing blogger it may be time to man up and plunk down some of my hard earned cash to buy a waterproof video camera.  The four cameras below are my favorites so far.

From left to right:  Kodak PlaySport 1st generation, Kodak PlaySport 2nd generation, GoPro HERO HD 960, and the Sanyo VPC-WH1

Have you dropped your camera in water before?  Perhaps you’d like to buy one of the cameras above as a donation to this high quality fishing site.  Let us know in the comments below!

Nicely done Matt – good trick. So, should I still get that warranty? Maybe a year would do. 🙂

  • Nice save with the rice trick. Had heard about it before, but never dunked anything (yet) where I’ve had to try it. Glad it worked for you, will have to keep in mind.

I have a Playsport 1st Gen – video is fine, but still photos can be hit or miss, if you have the budget, there’s a lot of great point & shoot cameras that now have HD video capabilities you may want to check out. Kill two birds with one stone and don’t worry about having to carry around a normal camera for stills and a WP one for video. Have heard good things about the Panasonic Lumix for example. Also, gazelle.com is a good place to get $ for your electronics once you decide to trade the old ones in.

I’m trying the rice trick right now but I’m afraid it won’t work because I opened the camera after it got wet. What do you think guys? Will I still fix ma camera?
