Many fishers wonder about the Weight of Crappie. The typical Crappie measure around 10 to 11 inches, while the black Crappie commonly reach 10.8 inches. Crappie of 10 inches weigh about half a pound.
However the Weight of that fish ranges a lot based on the region from which it comes.
Crappie Size and Weight
Black Crappie of 12 inches from one lake can at least reach a pound. The same big fish from another lake in the same state maybe will weigh almost 1.25 pounds. Go a bit more south and it can reach 1.5 puonds.
In the north of United States Crappie usually do not grow this big as in the south states.
Only the length does not describe everything. A fisher caught a white Crappie of 19 inches, that was slim as a rail and did not reach even 2 pounds. It weighed around 1.5 pounds despite the huge size.
Without enough thickness the length does not give much Weight. Remember that.
The biggest reported length for black Crappie is 19.3 inches. The maximum known Weight for black Crappie sits under 6 pounds. The world record for white Crappie was caught in Enid Lake, Mississippi, July 31st 1957, and weighed 5 pounds 3 ounces.
Pictures of the world record black Crappie show that it weighed 6.6 pounds, measured 19.5 inches with 16.5-inch thickness. Both species, white and black Crappie, reach a similar maximum of around 5 to 6 pounds. In Arkansas and Louisiana one logged 5 too 6 pounds for black Crappie and 3 to 4 pounds for white.
Crappie of 15 inches is a good base for trophy size, and Weight matters more than length here. Crappie of 16.5 inches weighed 2 pounds 11 ounces and carried eggs. Fish of 16 inches reached 2 pounds 6 ounces, also with eggs.
A catch from Lake Houston was a big black Crappie that weighed 2.75 pounds and beat the prior record of 2.11 pounds.
Some had a mounted copy done from Crappie of 3 pounds 2 ounces, caught in April. Crappie between 10 and 12 inches are really good eating. When they grow big, one can even grill them, which does not commonly happen with Crappie except big flatside ones.
Charts for turning length to Weight help to guess the Weight after size of the Crappie, and those expected weights are of average state measure. Average numbers for black versus white Crappie differ. Not every fisher carries ascale, but it is fun to know the whole Weight.
