💡 Tip 1 — Measure Girth Correctly: Always measure girth at the widest point of the fish's body, typically just behind the pectoral fins. A wet soft tape measure gives the most accurate reading. Even a 1-inch error in girth can change your weight estimate by 5–10 lb on a large tarpon.
💡 Tip 2 — Fork Length vs Total Length: Use fork length (tip of snout to the fork of the tail) for the most consistent formula results. Total length can add 2–4 inches on tarpon due to the elongated tail, which would overestimate weight. When in doubt, measure fork length.

Tarpon is a really big fish. It can reach up to 8 feet long and weigh even 280 pounds. Most commonly they are around 6 feet long and weigh about 150 pounds while the age of such fish usually range between 15 and 30 years.

Female Tarpon tend to be 10 to 15 percent heavier than the male.

Tarpon Size and How to Guess Their Weight

The world record for all-tackle Tarpon according to IGFA stands at 286 pounds and 9 ounces caught near the coast of Guinea-Bissau in Africa in 2003 by Max Domecq. The overall record stays at 286 pounds, while fly record reaches 202 pounds and Florida records have 243 pounds. Although many anglers probably beat those records, they chose to release their catch instead of weigh it.

For example, one Tarpon, caught and checked on reliable scales, weighed 210 pounds and 11 ounces, with length of 91 icnhes and girth of 46 inches.

To guess the weight of Tarpon without use of scales, the task can be hard. One commonly uses a method based on length and girth. To count, one lays the body girth on one axis and the fork length on the other in a chart.

A changed version of the Babcock formula from 1936 works well. One multiplies the length by the square of the girth, divides by 800 and adds 13 percent for more precise rating. That method gives a result within 3 to 5 percent of the reel weight.

Older math, called the Arbara equation, was used for a long time, but it lowers the weight of Tarpon by up to 15 percent. Current updated studies help anglers make safer weight guesses for Atlantic Tarpon.

Tarpon appear in various sizes depending on the region. In the Tampa Gulf, fish of 80 to 100 pounds are very common, and reported 100 to 150 pounders show commonly. Near the coast of Virginia, one spotted Tarpon over 120 pounds.

In Texas, the fish range from 50 to 150 pounds along the marshes. Young Tarpon usually weigh between 15 and 60 pounds. Small Tarpon can be only 5 to 15 pounds heavy, and some freshwater ones were caught at only 10 pounds and 31 inches long.

In mangrove areas, Tarpon up to around 30 pounds are quite commonly met.

Carrying big Tarpon from the water can really hurt it. The fish depends on water to support its body mass, and removing a heavy body risks damage to the internal organs. Because of that, for Tarpon over 30 to 40 pounds, it is best to keepthem in the water during release.

Catching an 80-pound Tarpon is a thrilling adventure, but at such size careful treatment of the fish is needed.
