⚠️ ABYC Capacity Formula: The American Boat and Yacht Council recommends dividing the usable deck area (in square feet) by 7 to determine maximum persons. Always subtract gear weight from your total capacity before calculating how many people can safely board.
💧 Tube Buoyancy Rule: Each cubic foot of submerged tube displaces approximately 62.4 lb (28.3 kg) of water. A tube's usable lift is calculated at 90% of total displacement to maintain safe freeboard. Triple-tube (tritoon) setups increase total lift capacity by approximately 30–50% over twin-tube configurations of the same length.

Pontoon boats are not all the same size. The capacity depends on the size. Small models max out around eight people, mid-size reach 13, and big ones reach 15 passengers.

Near the seat of the driver is usually a sticker that points out what the boat fits

How Many People and How Much Weight a Pontoon Boat Can Carry

For many families a 20 to 21-foot pontoon is the ideal spot. Here the maximum capacity is around 10 to 11 folks, but you are more comfortabke with 8 to 10 folks on board. That size gives the space for passengers, gear and planned activities, without the boat feeling hard to handle.

Here is what often fools folks. You load a 22-foot pontoon with its 14 passengers, as the sticker says, and later add two coolers for ice, drinks and food for all. So you already pass the limits.

The weight capacity covers everything on the boat, not only the folks. Add some extra stuff, and suddenly you cross the limit… So you must reduce the number of passengers according to the total weight.

The maximum weight capacity is calculated very carefully. It counts the dead weight of the boat, deck, fixtures and engine, together with dynamic stuff like passengers, fuel and gear. A bass boat bears 3 to 4 folks, but a pontoon reaches 8 to 10.

That marks a big difference in capacity.

Here is something important to note: the rule about capacity only applies to boats under 20 feet. The Coast Guard does not require it for bigger ones. Because of that some old or big models lack it.

Sometimes, passing the listed limits is not a federal crime, but the USCG can fine you if engine or passenger weight pass the marks.

Single fishing pontoons are a totally different thing. They max out between 350 and 450 pounds, which seems enough until you add body weight, waders, shoes, fishing gear, coolers, anchor and rod tubes. You pass it quickly, which messes with the way the boat works in water.

For a second person choose at least a 12-foot boat with tubes of 18 inches diameter or more.

Generally longer pontoons have a wider diameter, which gives better stability and more weight capacity. A long pontoon also helps the boat stay flat during heavy water conditions. A 22-footer handles waves better than a shorter model.
