Different Bass and How to Tell Them
Black bass does not answer truly to that group. It belongs to the genus Micropterus. According to various opinions, there are between 10 and 12 species.
Scholars mention between 9 and 13 distinctly separate. Between them are largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, Alabama bass, Suwannee bass, shoal bass, Guadalupe bass, Florida bass and redeye bass. It has dark bars likely green or brown of neck to tail. Rather, most other species, included largemouth, have side strips. Smallmouth show clear, broken strip above the anal fin.
Its color is silvery yellow, dorsal fins join. It lacks a tooth patch beside the center behind the tongue.
Yellow bass forms other group. It has broad body more than third of its whole length. Strips at it are weak, only one go to the tail.
That fish owns a tooth patch beside center behind the tongue. Spotted bass receives spots early. It looks largemouth, but with clearer marks.
Shape, mouth size and fighting it looks more to smallmouth. You also call it Kentucky bass or simply „spot“.
Big differences appear in growth. Pure largemouth bass rarely go over 10 pounds, during Florida bass reaches above 20 pounds. Size self do not show the species.
A 6-inch smallmouth can be already adult, but a 6-inch largemouth stays child. Young basses look like adults, but with less clear attributes.
