The season for catching crabs is not the same everywhere. It changes based on the species and the region. In Alaska the time for royal crab can stretch even during the cold winter months from October until January each year.
Alaskan Crab fishers have mostly set times based on the kind of Crab that they catch and the place of their work. Red royal Crab, bairdi and opilio all start October 15th and last until April 1st or until the limits are reached. Opilio Crab starts in January.
Crab Fishing Seasons in Different Places
The most popular times for Crab Fishing Season happen between October and January, and the allowed length of seasons tends to shrink over the years. Over time, the season for red Crab shrunk to only four days.
Sometimes supplies fall too low, so that the season simply does not happen. The Bering Sea for red royal Crab was cancelled one year because of too low stock. That was only the second closure in around 25 years.
If the amounts are too low, the tiem becomes very short. Because of rules against overfishing and strict numbers about capture, many ships could not work in some seasons.
Even so, not everywhere does Crab Fishing Season happen in winter. In some states, the seasons come during warmer months, because crabs will be less active in cold. In Maryland, the Crab Fishing Season starts April 1st and ends in November.
The end of September and the start of October marks the best moment for catching hear. Typical Crab Fishing Season periods stretch from November until June or July, although different things can change those terms.
On the West Coast, the situation shifts often. Washington said that the summer Crab Fishing Season in Puget Sound will start July 1st in several sea zones. The commercial Dungeness Crab Fishing Season in Oregon was delayed along the whole coast until at least December 16th.
The fun capture of rock crabs, including red, yellow and brown, stays open during the whole year in all California.
There are also species with very short times for harvest. Some crabs cost more because of the short period when they shed their shell to be gathered. That phase starts in May and ends in September, and one finds them at special fish markets.
The red Crab from deep sea are fished by means of traps and are found on the slope in depth between 200 and 1800 metres, from the Gulf of Maine until the Gulf of Mexico.
