If a person dont use a three-way swivel, the movement of the bait and the sinker will cause the line to spin on itself and eventually create knots in the line that will interfere with fishing.
What a Three-Way Swivel Does and How to Use It
The size of the three-way swivel that a person use will depend on the size of the fish that they are fishing for and the strength of the fishing line being used. If a person is fishing for small fish, like panfish, they will use a small three-way swivel so that it will be less likely to frighten the small fish. If a person is fishing for large fish, they will use a large three-way swivel so that it can take the stronger pull of the large fish.
The three-way swivel should have more breaking strength then the fishing line. This is to ensure that if the fish gets too strong, the line will break before the three-way swivel do. There are several different fishing rigs out there, and each of them utilize the three-way swivel in different ways.
For instance, dropper rigs uses the three-way swivel to keep the sinker positioned beneath the bait, which allows the bait to remain above the bottom of the water. Walleye rigs may use a three-way swivel to connect both the spinner and the weight of the bait so that the weight remains on the bottom of the water while the bait spins. Catfish rigs uses a heavy-duty three-way swivel because the catfish are a large fish species and produce alot of tension on the fishing line when they are hooked.
River rigs may use the three-way swivel to ensure that the sinker remains in place in the current, and the three-way swivel will prevent the line from getting twisted due to the current in the river. In addition to the three-way swivel, there are also different types of sinker that can be used. For instance, people use bank sinkers to allow the sinker to roll over rocks in the riverbed.
For pyramid sinkers, the weight of the sinker will grip the sand in the riverbed. For egg sinker, the sinker will glide over gravel in the riverbed. Each of these types of sinkers will hold the fishing rig in place in the area where the fish lives.
By comparing the three-way swivel to other fishing rigs, a person can gain an understanding of which rig might be best for a given situation. For instance, the Carolina rig allows the sinker to move freely along the fishing line but does not hold the sinker in place nearly as well as the three-way swivel does. The drop shot rig is used to suspend the bait from the fishing line but is better for using live bait with the three-way swivel.
The two-hook bottom rig may lead to tangles between the two hooks since it dont contain a three-way swivel. The length of the arms on the three-way swivel will impact how the bait move in the water. The dropper arm can be between six and 18 inches in length to keep the sinker close to the bottom of the water or allow it to be further from the bottom of the water if it is longer.
The length of the leader will determine how free the bait is to swim in the water. Leaders between 12 and 36 inches in length will allow the bait to move freely, and a longer leader will work better if the fish are wary of the fishing rig. Additionally, the strength of the three-way swivel should always be stronger than the line test of the fishing line.
Last, if a person has used the three-way swivel in saltwater, the person should always rinse it with fresh water to prevent the corrosion of the metal components in the three-way swivel when it is exposed to saltwater.
