A Hot N Tot is a type of lipped crankbait that is designed to diving into the water. Three different variable determines the depth of a Hot N Tot when it is cast into the water. These three variables is the size of the Hot N Tot, the speed of the boat, and the weight of the fishing lines.
By controlling these three variable, a Hot N Tot can be placed into the water at the specific depth where the fish lives in that water. The size of the Hot N Tot is one of the three variables that will affect the depth of the lure. Smaller Hot N Tot models will tend to stay in the shallows of the water because smaller models is lighter in weight, as well as have smaller diving lips that will push against the water.
Three Things That Change How Deep a Hot N Tot Dives
Conversely, larger Hot N Tot model will dive deeper into the water due to the additional weight of the larger models, as well as because the larger models has larger diving lips that will push against the water to allow the model to dive. The second variable are the speed of the boat in which the angler is casting the Hot N Tot into the water. If the boat is moving more slow, the lure will take longer to dive into the water.
If the boat is moving faster, the Hot N Tot will experience more pressure from the water against its diving lip to push the Hot N Tot deeper into the water. Thus, by changing the speed of the boat, you can adjust the depth at which the Hot N Tot can be cast without having to change the lure or the fishing line. The third variable is the weight of the fishing line.
If the fishing line is lighter, it will experience less resistance in the water then if it were a heavier fishing line. Thus, when using a lighter fishing line, the Hot N Tot will be able to reach its full diving depth. If, however, the angler uses a heavier fishing line, the Hot N Tot will remain at a higher depth in the water column.
For instance, using a six-pound line will allow the lure to dive deeper than if a seventeen-pound line was being used. Many angler will use different weights of fishing line on different rods to allow their Hot N Tot to reach different depths in the water. The color of the Hot N Tot will not impact the depth of the lure, but the color is an important factor in that the Hot N Tot will need to be colored to contrast with the water and/or the baitfish living in the water.

Thus, anglers should have a variety of Hot N Tot models of different colors so that they may find the color that the fish of that area most prefer. In addition to the three main factors that affect the depth at which a Hot N Tot can dive into the water, there is a few additional tools that can be employed to allow anglers to adjust the depth of the Hot N Tot without adjusting the amount of line that is let out.
For instance, anglers can clip snap weights to the front of the Hot N Tot to add additional weight to the lure, which will force the Hot N Tot to dive deeper into the water. Additionally, planers and downriggers allow for multiple lines of Hot N Tot models to be cast into the water from the boat at different depths, and these tools are most useful for waters deeper than twenty feet. To utilize a Hot N Tot most effective, the anglor should first use a sonar device to determine the depth at which the fish live in the water.
Once the depth is known, the angler can select the size of the Hot N Tot to allow the lure to reach those depths. Additionally, the angler can adjust the amount of fishing line that is let out and the weights that are added to the Hot N Tot to ensure that the Hot N Tot reaches the depth of the fish that are living in that area. Finally, by recording the speed of the boat, the amount of line that was let out, and the size of the Hot N Tot that was used when the fish were caught, the angler will be able to easily repeat those steps to catch the same type of fish in the future.
