When talking about the towing weight of a boat, the typical ability of dragging autos should be at least around 1 800 pounds. Most vehicles can drag boats that weigh between 1 000 and 2 000 pounds, without big troubles. Even so that amount can grow quickly when one starts to add all extra items.
Little round boats in the range of 14 to 16 feet usually have total weight between 1 000 and 1 800 pounds, including the boat itself, the trailer and the basic gear. Compact boats for ski of 16 to 18 feet weigh around 1 500 to 2 500 pounds. Medium boats for ski and surfing, in the range of 19 to 21 feet, reach 2 500 to 4 000 pounds.
How Much Weight Can Your Car Tow When Towing a Boat
A simple 20-foot open boat alone can weigh 3 500 to 5 100 pounds, depending on the maker and the used materials.
The weight of the trailer also plays a role. Little models weigh between 300 and 700 pounds. Trailers with two axles for boats can pass 1 200 to 2 000 pounds or even more.
A normal trailer for fishing boat has maximum ability of around 2 700 pounds. The fuel adds up quickly. To count its weight, one multiplies the number of gallons by 6 pounds for gasoline or 7.1 pounds for diesel.
Fifty gallons of gasoline weigh around 415 pouds.
So we arrive to all those extras. Anchors, fishing gear, life jackets, coolers, bags and clothes, water toys (they easily add yet 100 to 200 pounds). Only few makers point the whole packed weight, that covers boat, engine and trailer together.
When that happens, it commonly is the dry weight, without batteries, fuel ore safety gear.
The tongue weight deserves attention especially. It should be around 10 percent of the total weight of boat and trailer. If it is too heavy, it pushes the back of the car down, what hampers the driver and the traction.
Good spread of the weight really is useful during the towing weight of a boat trailer.
When the tow vehicle is a pickup, the load ability matters too. The load ability shows how much weight one can lay in the bed of the truck, and that is key for loading gear before heading to the water. One good tip is to drag with little fuel in the boat and fill it only right before the ramp, so that the truck does not need to drag all that extra weight the whole way.
Some states have laws about the towing weight of too broad or too high loads overnight or during the weekend, so check the rules for every state along the way. The wind drag during towing shows more than the weight itself. Use the dragging rule of the car, aids for traction, and always leave more distance to stop, becausesafety is the main concern during towing of heavy goods.
