💡 Accuracy Tip: Always measure girth at the widest point, just behind the pectoral fin. Adding girth to your calculation improves accuracy from 넕% to କ%. Use a soft measuring tape and keep the fish in the water as long as possible for a true measurement.
💡 Formula Note: The standard Length x Girth² / 800 formula (used for most fish) is adapted for redfish with a divisor of 900 for slot fish and 875 for bull reds, reflecting their deeper, rounder body profile. Length-only estimates use a species-specific condition factor derived from Gulf Coast survey data.

Red drum can reach nice size. The typical weights range from 10 to 45 pounds, although they can grow even to around 50 pounds. They also reach lengths of about 3 feet or around 1.2 metres.

That species can live to 60 years in natural surroundings, which is a great age for fish.

How Big Are Red Drum

The most famous red drum that was caught by folk, weighed surprisingly 94 pounds and 2 ounces. It was found near Cape Hatteras, along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The world record was marked November 7th 1984 by a fisher called David Deuel.

Such quiet places commonly give the champions for global titles.

Red drum starts to breed already at the age of 4 years. Then it usually measures between 660 and 700 millimeters, weighing around 3.4 to 4 kilos. Therefore, they yet are not really big when they first breed.

The state record for red drum happened at Coco Marina, where the fish weighed 61.5 pounds. Its length was only around 50 inches. The main lesson is that everything depends on the thickness of the fish, not only on its length.

Use a scale for exact weight to beat the ease of guessing.

When talking about guessing, there are ways to estimate the wait of red drum without using heavy tools. One way means to measure the width at the broadest place and the length from the tip of the bottom jaw to the V-shape of the tail, then put those values in a formula. One formula offers to square the width, multiply by the length and divide by 800.

For example, for a fish with 19-inch width and 37-inch length, one gets about 16.7 pounds by that math. A simple option is to cube the length and divide by 2378 to estimate the weight.

The width of red drum usually matches half of the length plus one or two inches. Some fish simply are fatter than others, or have broader heads and shoulders, so that changes. For instance, one tagged fish measured 29 inches with 16-inch width, while another reached 26.5 inches with 15-inch width.

One caught a 42-inch red drum near Ocracoke, that weighed almost 42 pounds. Another fisher succeeded with a 38-inch sample, estimated at around 30 to 40 pounds. In autumn, especially during storms, big adults of red drum move to gulf beaches, probably to spawn.

That one calls the bull of Redfish. Daily they move from shallow to deeper waters according totides and temperatures of the sea.
