How to Choose and Care for Spinnerbaits
Using willow blade will cause the spinnerbait to move slow and produce a subtle flash of light. Using willow blades is ideal for moving the spinnerbait quick over grass flats in the water. Using Colorado blades will cause the spinnerbait to create heavy vibrations since the blades will catch more water than the willow blades.
Using Colorado blades is more ideal for dirty or stained water since the vibrations will carry further to the fish in murky waters. Spinnerbaits have several component that contribute to the movement of the bait. The wire arm hold the head, the blades, and the skirt of the spinnerbait.
The clevis allow the blades to either swing freely or be locked in a specific position. The curvature on the face of each metal blade will create lift for each blade to remain high in the water column. There is a specific spacing between the two blade on a tandem spinnerbait to prevent fouling of the blades.
Fouling is when the blades interferes with each other. The finish on the blade will alter the flash of the blade. Flash is the reflection of the light from the blade of a spinnerbait, and the flash will penetrate deep into the water column.
When choosing spinnerbaits, you must choose the size of the metal blades based off the clarity of the water. In clear water, small blades of approximately one and a half inch in size should be used. Using small metal blades will produce less flash, which is better for fish that are pressured in clear water.
In open water, two-inch blade can be used. In stained or murky water, blades of approximately three inches in size should be used so that the vibrations created by the blades will travel a long distance into the murky water. The wire gauge of the spinnerbait also affect how the spinnerbait performs.
If the spinnerbait has light wire frame, it is best for small blades and clear water because the light frames allow the bait to track fastly. If the spinnerbait has standard wire frames, it is best for blades in the middle size and for stained water. If the water is murky and the blades on the spinnerbait are large, use heavy wire frames for these situation.
If you are using the spinnerbait in saltwater, ensure that you use stainless steel wire for the bait. To ensure that your spinnerbaits function correctly, you must maintain them. Replace the blade on your spinnerbaits if they become dull.
Use pliers to open the split ring on the spinnerbait, and ensure that you size the replacement ring correctly. Also, ensure that the clevis on your spinnerbaits are not bent because it will prevent the blades from moving correctly. Always rinse your spinnerbaits with fresh water after using them in saltwater environment and dry them thorough.
If you do not dry your spinnerbaits, the metal will become corroded. Store your spinnerbaits in wraps so that the blades on the spinnerbaits dont become dull during storage. You should of kept them in a dry place.
