💡Practical matching tips

Measure the head, not the box. Many specialty fly lines are intentionally heavy for their printed line number. If a manufacturer publishes a full-head grain weight, compare that number to the calculator center and window instead of relying only on the rod label.
Test at fishing distance. A line that feels perfect at 55 ft may be poor at 25 ft under trees. Match the grain window to the distance, fly mass, and pickup style you actually use most often.

Spool up some line on your five-weight, tune-up your rod and take a few steps onto bank. Make a cast. Nothing. Your line just hangs limply in mid-air, refusing to load the flex for which you shelled out your cash.
