Where did they go? Most times, they haven’t gone anywhere. They’ve just gone somewhere else. It is probably the wrong place and probably at the wrong time of day. Maybe you’re throwing to the wrong species for the water temp. Or maybe you’re throwing into an area that is now empty because the trout have since scattered out to find something to hide behind.

Knowing the ins and outs of the stocking process will alter your approach to fishing the water. It changes from blind luck to a calculated strategy. Catching fingerlings is an exercise in ecology rather than an instant fishing chance. A three-inch fingerling require something to hide behind from a heron, a pike, or a bass. It buries itself into some rocks or weeds out of your reach. For action now, aim for those larger catchable trout measuring nine inches or more. Catchable trout has enough body mass to maintain position against predator and current. That means they will suspend higher in the water column where you can see your lures. The fish are still there; they just don’t want anything to do with you or any spinning worm or spinnerbait you dangle under their nose. Bring out your thermometer: If the needle is starting to creep north of seventy degrees, grab your stuff and get outta Dodge. It ain’t nothin’ personal… It’s just science.
The seasonal nature of fishing can vary like crazy based off where you live. In the Northeast, fishermen are targeting spring and fall stockings as stream temperatures remains cool from snow melt. Memorizing one stocking date across the nation are less effective than matching your calendar with local climate patterns.
Patience is a virtue When you get on the water, waiting for several days can pay off big. Those freshly stocked trout is confused and vulnerable. They aren’t actively looking for prey but instead find cover quickly. Letting them sit for 48-72 hours before starting to fish again gives them time to set up shop, regain their bearings and start feeding once more. In that first period of time you want to make some casts to deeper pools and inlets where there is better oxygen content and predatory pressure isn’t as high. Small baits such as size eight hooks resembles what they’re used to seeing to eat in these shallower areas. And sooner or later, you’ll sense that telltale bite when a hesitant trout decides to commit to the offering. You’ll be rewarded with a battle that makes getting up early worth it.
