The initial installation of the Lowrance Active Target system can be a bit hectic, and it is not a bad idea to seek professional help when it comes to the installation of these systems.

One of the more common issues that anglers face with the Lowrance Active Target system is the no source error.

This is why there is a high chance that you’ll likely run into the same complications with this system. This can be quite annoying to deal with as it prevents people from using the device.

Though, you should note that there are several reasons that might cause a problem like this.

Most of the time, this issue is caused by power or connection issues, and you’ll have to narrow down the problem by checking both of these factors.

So, here are some specifics on how to fix the Lowrance Active Target No Source issues.

Make sure that you go through all the steps provided carefully. This is essential as it helps people in understanding what might be causing the issue.

Having this information means that you can fix the problem easily as well as ensure that it can be prevented in the future.

Lowrance Active Target No Source Fix:

  1. Check For Loose Connections

The most straightforward fix to this issue with Lowrance Active Target no source is to check for loose connections. Even when the wiring is in good shape, the device won’t work until problems with the loose connections are addressed.

So, you need to make sure that there are no obstructions and that the power cables are correctly connected to the Display as well as the Lowrance module. Otherwise, you’ll be presented with the same No Source errors.

wires

People having trouble with the step should note that the only thing they have to do is remove the connections from their devices carefully.

This is important as simply tightening the cables does not work in a lot of cases. After the wires have been removed, these should be plugged back in tightly.

Most people can notice if the wire has been correctly installed or not. If you notice that the connection is still weak then it might be caused by a clog.

These can often occur in wirings that have been set up for a long time and there is usually no need to worry about them.

The only thing that you need to do is clear the dust from your wiring. If the clogs are stuck, then apply a little more pressure to remove them. Once done, your wires should then start fitting inside the connectors tightly.

This mostly results in the problem getting fixed but also make sure that you route the cables properly.

  1. Toggle Lowrance Active Target Power On/Off

Sometimes, the fix here is as simple as toggling the power on and off through the Active Target system. Make sure to recheck the connection of the yellow wire on your system with the power source.

If it is connected properly and the power source is in good health, just turn off the power for a few minutes and turn it back on. That should help you secure a response from the module through the Lowrance display.

restart

Some people might wonder why the soft reset or power cycling works. When it comes to this, you need to understand that devices like the Lowrance Active Target use temporary memory on them.

This stores data from the processor as well as feedback from the user.

As a result, the device is able to work efficiently and quickly without any issues. The only problem with this is that the GPS also requires some rest.

If you are someone who travels a lot and enjoys long trips, then giving your device some rest can be essential.

If you had not been doing this, then there is a high chance that the memory on your device might already be clogged. The best way to clear this issue is by soft resetting the device.

Hence the procedure mentioned above can be the easiest solution people can use in this case.

  1. Inspect Wiring Conditions On The Device

It is also possible that the wiring you’re relying on is in rough shape. If that is the case, then you need to inspect the wiring condition and have it replaced immediately.

Even if there are small frayed sections or the wiring is kinked at weird angles, the safer bet is to always go with a replacement.

There is no point in trying to install the Active Target system with damaged wiring, and there is a good chance that no source errors are caused by the rough conditions of your wiring cluster. So, get it replaced to avoid further issues.

inspect wiring

If you are having trouble trying to locate the wires that might be damaged, then the best way for this is by looking for small cracks or breaks on the cable.

These indicate that the wire is damaged, and needs to be replaced with a new one.

The most common reason behind this is mostly improper routing. This is exactly why it is recommended that people keep a check on how their wires have been installed.

If you notice that the cables are not routed properly then this should be fixed quickly before these get damaged.

If the wires are already broken and you are still having trouble trying to find them. Then another option that you have is to use a multimeter or voltmeter. These are devices that can help in checking the electrical current flowing through cables.

The device should help you in locating dead wires so that these can be replaced. Some users might feel hesitant trying to replace the cables on their own.

If that is the case, then your only option is to contact a specialist that will do this for you.

  1. Battery Might Be Running Into Issues

Aside from the cables on your Lowrance Active Target, another thing people need to keep in check is the batteries on their devices.

These usually last people a long time which is why they don’t have to worry about them. But there are also some issues that these can run into.

battery concept

You need to understand that the batteries on your boat are the main source of power for everything.

If these start running into issues then your GPS as well as your vehicle will also cause problems. If you notice any of these then it is best that you start checking the battery.

The no source error can often be from the battery not providing the device with optimal power.

You can confirm this by using a voltmeter on your device and then taking readings of its current. If there are fluctuations or low currents, then you need to deal with the issue quickly.

Start by checking the terminals on your battery. If these are clogged, then you need to remove all the dust carefully.

Sometimes there might be corrosion on the terminals which can only be removed by using an alkaline solution. Pour a solution of water and vinegar if you have it lying around.

People who don’t have this with them should warm up some water and then pour it over the terminals.

This helps in softening the layer so that it can be removed easily. Once done, place the wires back on the terminals and let your battery charge for some time.

If you notice that the batteries are no longer able to hold their original charge, then it might be finally time to replace them with new ones.

Just make sure that you purchase these from a reliable brand so that they can last you a long time.

  1. Check For Hardware Issues

Lastly, the possibility of hardware issues always remains even when the unit is new.

So, if you’re sure that the wiring is in good shape and the connection with the ports is optimal, try to reach out to the dealer and claim the warranty.

Lowrance dealers are pretty responsive, and you will be provided with a replacement in no time.

So, make sure to reach out and have them help you with a fresh piece. However, you’ll most likely be able to narrow down the issue to lose connections or defective wiring.

Almost all the anglers running into this error were able to fix the no source error with Lowrance Active Target by going over the wiring connections, and hopefully, you won’t have to bother with the hassle of replacing the unit as well.

  1. I have a new unit and new wiring and checked all wiring several times and have the yellow wire on isolated power on /off switch . My first start with my new HDS LIVE I have on the screen said No Source but change the screen to a different screen then go back to live target it came on, then the rest of the day no problem. I am worried about when my unit gets older and I have more problems NO warranty? The second fishing trip the same thing happen, check all three the lights was correct. Does the active target needed to warm up? Do I need to down load up date to my new unit ?
